A frenum is the small band of tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth or the lip to the gum. When a frenum is too short or attached too far forward it restricts movement, which can show up as difficulties with latching in infants, speech difficulty in children, or a stubborn gap between the front teeth.
At Bluewater Dental, our Juno Beach team releases restrictive frenums in a short procedure with local anesthetic. Infants and toddlers are usually referred by a pediatrician or lactation consultant, and in adults the procedure often precedes orthodontic treatment so a closed gap does not reopen afterward.
Dr. Blake Willoughby leads our Juno Beach practice on Donald Ross Road, and we will coordinate with your pediatrician, lactation consultant, or speech therapist as needed.
