A frenum is the thin band of tissue tethering the tongue to the floor of the mouth or the lip to the gum. When one is too short or attached too far forward it restricts movement, and that turns up as difficulty latching in infants, unclear speech in children, or a persistent gap between the upper front teeth.
At Bluewater Dental, our Palm Beach Gardens office releases restrictive frenums in a short procedure under local anesthetic. Infants and toddlers usually arrive on referral from a pediatrician or lactation consultant. In adults the release often comes before orthodontic treatment, so a closed gap does not simply reopen.
Dr. Calvin Kaler leads our Palm Beach Gardens office on Burns Road, and we coordinate with your pediatrician, lactation consultant, or speech therapist as needed.
